Koppen starts cooking as Aberdeen and Celtic dealt transfer blows by Ibrox guru - report

Rangers fans have been frantically updating phone screens in the search for fresh transfer business this summer.

But to date only two new names have been added to the squad.

Moves for Brazilian left-back Jefte and AC Milan defender Clinton Nsiala certainly fit the club’s revamped player trading transfer model.

The two players are also joined by a fresh loan deal for Oscar Cortes which will see the Colombian join permanently at the end of the season.

Mohamed Diomande has also completed his £4.3m loan-to-buy deal from FC Nordsjælland following an initial part time switch in January.

Now, Rangers and transfer guru Nils Koppen look set to confirm two new signings as the Gers look closer to home for squad reinforcements.

Aberdeen fans set for Barron blow

According to Sky Sports, Rangers are closing on a deal to bring Connor Barron to the club from Aberdeen.

Out of contract at Pittodrie, the deal bears a striking resemblance to the transfer of fellow Dons youth product Ryan Jack back in 2017.

With injury-plagued Jacko leaving the Gers at the end of his contract this summer, it’s left a homegrown void that will be plugged by the arrival of Barron.

The Daily Record are claiming that Rangers have held off substantial interest from Serie A and the English Championship to complete a deal.

It appears Rangers have learned their lesson from the Lewis Ferguson fiasco and won’t be letting the Scotland U21 international slip from their grasp.

The move is a clear blow to Aberdeen and their supporters, many of whom remain bitter over Rangers moves for Jack and fellow ex-Pittodrie star Scott Wright.

Rangers pip Celtic to transfer

According to the Sky Sports report, Liam Kelly will also be joining Connor Barron as another homegrown option at Rangers.

The Ibrox academy goalkeeper – who was named in Scotland’s Euro 2024 squad and is currently in Germany – is set to return to the club six years on from leaving Ibrox for Livingston.

Interestingly, Rangers academy goalkeeper and Jack Butland back-up Robby McCrorie could be heading in the opposite direction.

About to enter the final year of his contract, it’s been claimed that Aberdeen are keen suitors for McCrorie as they look to replace the outgoing Kelle Roos.

It’s a path previously trod by McCrorie’s twin brother Ross, who left Rangers for the Dons in 2021 before earning a £2m move to Bristol City two years later.

Interestingly, the Rangers move for Liam Kelly could also represent a blow for Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The Parkhead club are on the hunt for goalkeeping reinforcements this summer and according to reports were interested in taking the ex-Motherwell goalie to Parkhead.

Both players will boost the Rangers homegrown quota heading into season 24/25 with more names set to follow in the coming weeks.

This includes in the striker position, where Rangers are reportedly on the hunt for two new additions.
