Leeds may just have been handed a big boost in their pursuit of Joe Rodon if reports are true - opinion

Leeds United may have just been handed a potential boost in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon.

Rodon is thought to be Leeds‘ number one target at this stage of the window but newly promoted trio Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton have all been linked with hijacking the deal.

Leeds are expected to do everything in their power to try and win the race for Rodon, but unfortunately, the reality of being a Championship club again will make things more difficult financially.

After a one-year extension was triggered in his Spurs contract, Leeds could potentially propose a loan with a future buy option, but the North London side may prefer a permanent sale.

Of all the Premier League sides linked, it would appear Ipswich’s interest is the strongest with manager Kieran McKenna reportedly a big fan of the Welshman.

Ipswich could hand Leeds boost in Rodon race

It would be a real blow if Leeds were to lose out to Ipswich for Rodon given how long they spent fighting against them for promotion last season.

Ultimately it would just show the sheer difference in finances that come when you are in the Premier League.

However, if a new report from the Daily Telegraph is to be believed then Ipswich may actually be about to hand Leeds a boost in their pursuit of their former loan star.

It is said the Tractor Boys have actually made Hull City centre-back Jacob Greaves their top centre-back target this summer, which could therefore divert their attention away from Rodon.

It is unclear how much Greaves would potentially cost this summer but Hull are keen to keep him. Not only that, but he is still only 23 and being English usually tends to drive the price up.

While Ipswich are looking elsewhere, Leeds simply have to do everything they can to try and get a quick deal done for Rodon. Hopefully he would like to come.

Leeds’ interest in Rodon could depend on player wishes

As mentioned, the chances of Leeds actually being able to sign Rodon this summer may depend heavily on what he wants to do.

Rodon spoke towards the end of the season about how happy he has been at Elland Road but given he is 26, he may now want to really test himself in the Premier League.

However, the best way about doing that could be returning to Leeds, helping them get promoted and then adapting to the league in a team he knows well.

That said, if Premier League finances do come calling, there may not be anything Leeds can do.
