'Also told...': Sheffield Wednesday now in 'formal discussions' with 'magic' player over a move - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday have now entered ‘formal discussions’ with a ‘magic’ free agent.

Sheffield Wednesday are making great use of the free agent market in the early stages of the transfer window.

The Owls have already snapped up both Ben Hamer and Max Lowe after they were released by Watford and Sheffield United respectively.

Wednesday aren’t no strangers to the free market, but appear to be utilising it much more sensibly this time round.

Danny Rohl’s side are eager to make their third free transfer of the summer already, having entered talks with Ian Poveda.

Sheffield Wednesday enter talks with Ian Poveda

Journalist Alex Miller wrote on X: “Understand Sheffield Wednesday are at the stage of formal discussions with Ian Poveda with regard to a free agent switch. Also told that a Ligue 1 club have joined the long list of suitors.”

Wednesday have made it clear they want to bring the winger back to Hillsborough since his successful loan spell last term.

It is believed that Poveda has attracted a lot of interest since his exit from Leeds United though, so the Owls have a huge challenge to persuade him to return to the club.

Despite Wednesday’s pursuit, Miller has made it very clear that the Yorkshire club are very far from landing the Colombian just yet.

He added: “Little confused by the *very* celebratory response to this – there’s a way to go on it. With free agents, normal discussions not necessarily an indication that it’s close / even nearly close. But the talks are being had. Other clubs will play a part.”

Poveda is reportedly wanted by the likes of West Brom and Luton, as well as a host of other Championship – and now Ligue 1 – clubs.

Can the Owls win the race for the Colombian star?

The ‘magic’ attacker really has the pick of the bunch this summer, but he will know to be careful as he looks to finally revive his career.

Wednesday would surely have no chance at landing Poveda if he hadn’t spent the second half of last season on loan with the club.

However, the Owls may have a secret weapon in Danny Rohl, who may be their only chance at persuading him to return this summer.

Given how important the 24-year-old was before he got injured, he would be an exceptional bit of business if they could sign him for free.

Their German head coach is likely to have huge pulling power now, but it will boil down to whether Poveda is sensible enough to go where he knows he can perform, or whether he takes a risk and joins a club further up the table where he may struggle again.
