'Undoubtedly...': Journalist gives clear verdict on rumoured Sheffield Wednesday player exit

A Sheffield Wednesday player has reportedly rejected a new contract offer, with Championship clubs reportedly interested

Following the conclusion of the successful 2023/24 season, where the Owls miraculously stayed in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday managed to tie down fan favourites Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer to contracts for the next campaign.

Several crucial players whose existing contract were set to expire this summer were offered new deals, as announced in the retained list.

Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has no doubt been a massive factor in current players committing to the club after their 20th place finish.

However, it now looks as though Josh Windass may leave as a free agent this summer.

Windass, 30, is out of contract at the end of this month. But recent reports had revealed that talks between Windass and Sheffield Wednesday were progressing nicely.

It was thought that Windass would be extending his stay at Hillsborough after his goals in the final three games of the 2023/24 Championship campaign helped the Owls beat the drop.

But an emerging report on Friday claimed that Windass has since rejected Sheffield Wednesday’s final contract offer and now looks set to leave the club as a free agent this summer.

Windass has suitors in the Championship with Coventry City and Hull City thought to be leading the race.

Giving his verdict on Windass’ possible Sheffield Wednesday exit this summer, journalist Joe Crann posted on X:

Would Sheffield Wednesday miss Josh Windass

Since his arrival in South Yorkshire back in the Summer of 2020 from Wigan, Windass has been crucial in getting the Owls back to the Championship, particularly during the 2022/23 League One campaign, which saw the 30-year-old score at the death to beat Barnsley in the play-off final.

In that pivotal season, he also managed to tally an impressive 18 goal contributions, despite his difficulties with injury.

When at full fitness, Windass has the ability to be a top-end Championship attacker, something that could be irreplaceable for Sheffield Wednesday.

Off the pitch it’s also evident that the Hull-born attacker is a key figure of the dressing room and will be a massive miss.

Ever since Rohl took charge of Wednesday, he was able to right the wrongs from Xisco Munoz’s tenure, achieving 9th place if taking into account only the games from when he took over.

The business end of the season also saw Windass get the Owls over the line with a goal in each of the last three games of the season, which saw Wednesday win all on the spin and finish three points above the drop.

The Owls will be looking to build on that momentum and look towards the play-offs and losing such a valuable player could be damaging for their plans. Windass going to a rival top-six pushing side would be gut wrenching for all Wednesday fans, especially on a free.
