Plans to convert arson-ravaged piano school buildings on The Mount Annex, Lincoln College, Mount Lane, Newark

Plans to demolish areas of a vacant piano school building and convert it into housing have been submitted to Newark and Sherwood District Council.

St Leonard’s Hospital Trust has applied to change the use of the school site at The Mount Annex, Lincoln College in Mount Lane, Newark to three flats and five two-storey town houses.

The buildings were last occupied by the piano school in 2007 but in October 2022 a fire started by arsonists damaged some of the buildings to the south west corner of the site. It left the floors and roofs needing considerable repair.

If approved, the new houses would be a mix of one and two-bedroom accommodations with access to the properties from Mount Lane.

Plans include a shared garden and amenity space and bin storage is to be communal in the south east corner.

In the most recent proposal, the existing buildings are retained, with the removal of a small flat roof building to the south west corner of the site and the removal of four external stairs.

The existing roofs are to be repaired and reinstated with natural slate and the applicant has also proposed removing the columns and overhanging roof just beyond the main entrance door off Mount Lane.

The applicant claimed that the proposals have been carefully considered to respect and retain as much of the existing historic structure as possible and that the changes will have a positive impact on the area and neighbouring properties.
