Fabrizio Romano shares the ‘current plan’ for Jeremie Frimpong after rumours he’s moving to Liverpool

Liverpool have been unusually quiet during the first week of the transfer window.

The Reds often like to get their business done early into the summer. But now getting towards the end of June, they’ve so far kept their powder dry.

This time last year, for example, they’d already added Alexis Mac Allister to their first-team squad. What a signing that turned out to be.

But this time, with Arne Slot still to fully start work at the AXA Training Centre, there has been no such new addition.

That doesn’t mean that Liverpool aren’t working hard behind the scenes, though. The Reds have been linked with all sorts of players, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Fabrizio Romano shares Jeremie Frimpong ‘plan’

There have been suggestions that Frimpong is on Liverpool’s list for a little while now.

The 23-year-old had an excellent season with Bayer Leverkusen and has since been called into the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.

As Liverpool weigh up moving Trent Alexander-Arnold into midfield, there’s a possibility that they could do with a new right-back to compete with Conor Bradley.

Frimpong would look like a good option in that case, although there is also a chance Liverpool may see him as a forward player.

Either way, journalist Fabrizio Romano has taken to his Daily Briefing on Wednesday to offer an update on the case of Frimpong and Liverpool.

“Finally, we’ve seen Jeremie Frimpong linked with Arsenal in recent times, but also more recently with Liverpool,” says Romano.

“Still, I have no update on Frimpong now, because he will not decide anything on his future during the Euros – this is the current plan.

“The release clause is there and valid, but Frimpong wants to focus on the Euros now so the situation is currently quiet.”

Will Liverpool move for Jeremie Frimpong?

There had been claims that Frimpong’s relatively low release clause of around £35m was actually ending in the middle of June.

However, it seems as though Romano is confirming that not to be the case. For that kind of price, Frimpong would indeed be an intriguing signing.

However, we simply don’t think that Liverpool are looking for a right-back in the Dutchman’s mould.

If the plan is to move Alexander-Arnold infield, then Bradley will surely take his spot in the starting XI.

Joe Gomez could still act as cover, or if Liverpool need an extra body then there’s surely a cheaper option out there.

So, we don’t see this one coming to fruition, but you never know.
