The word on Carl Starfelt's future after departing Celtic for La Liga

Carl Starfelt left Celtic last year for Celta Vigo following two successful seasons at Parkhead, where he formed a solid partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Brendan Rodgers didn’t have much of a chance to work with the Sweden international, who departed the club in a £4.5 million switch in August 2023.

Truthfully, Celta Vigo encountered some difficult moments throughout the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, flirting with relegation before picking up to secure a 13th-placed finish.

From a personal standpoint, Starfelt made 30 appearances in his first term at the Spanish outfit, registering a solitary goal against Sevilla [Transfermarkt].

By his own admission, the 29-year-old indicated earlier this year that despite being satisfied with his own exploits on the pitch, he felt Celta Vigo should’ve been further up the league table.

If reports are to be believed, Starfelt could now be set for a new challenge this summer after just one year in Spain.

Carl Starfelt’s future in focus after leaving Celtic

According to Diario AS, they claim Starfelt could be up for sale this summer as Celta Vigo manager Claudio Giraldez is keen to secure an alternative centre-back on the market.

The Spanish top-flight outfit are reportedly willing to sell him to free up funds for incomings, which could see the Stockholm-born man on the move for a second time in two years.

Football Scotland have suggested that he could look for a competitive salary in the event the Sweden international were to complete an exit.

Rafa Benitez brought him to Galicia last summer; however, he was in and out of the side under Giraldez in the latter half of the campaign, which may explain why there are murmurs he could seek a new venture.

Celtic’s hunt for a central defender this summer

At this time of year, transfer whispers are not unusual online, especially about former Celtic players who could potentially be headed elsewhere.

Starfelt hasn’t been directly linked to his former club despite their hunt for a central defender; to make it clear, that hasn’t been reported anywhere official, as of yet.

Evaluating the situation, Celtic will need reinforcements at the back amid interest in Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki from Lecce and Legia Warsaw, respectively.

Celtic kick-off their new campaign against Ayr United at Somerset Park on July 5th. It will be intriguing to see if any prospective new arrivals are involved against the Honest Men.
