'Unlikely': Journalist claims that Alex Bass' exit 'rules out a deal' for 'amazing' Sunderland gem

A League Two club have now been told they are ‘unlikely’ to sign their Sunderland target.

Sunderland are likely to see a number of players leave the club this summer, with several youngsters hoping to pick up some game-time out on loan.

Eliezer Mayenda, Nectarios Triantis, Jewison Bennette and Matty Young all left Wearside temporarily last season and could face the same fate again this time round.

Young spent the final months of the campaign on loan at Darlington, where he helped the team avoid relegation from the National League North and was also named their Young Player of the Year.

After earning his first taste of senior football, the 17-year-old admitted he was ready to get ‘grafting’ in Sunderland’s senior squad.

With the Black Cats eager to keep hold ofAnthony Patterson and also land Simon Moore on a free transfer, Young is likely to be sent back out on loan.

As per Alan Nixon, the teenager has already been linked with Notts County, however that move is now thought to be ‘unlikely’ after they snapped up Alex Bass this week.

Notts County are now ‘unlikely’ to sign Matty Young

Following the 26-year-old’s permanent switch to Meadow Lane, journalist James Copley believes their pursuit of Young has now been ruled out.

He wrote on X: “As an aside, Alex Bass’ move to Notts County likely rules out a deal for Matty Young. League Two side had been linked with a move with the England youth man. Most of the National League are interested in a loan for Young, 17, alongside clubs from the EFL.”

He added: “Looks like Alex Bass is going there to play first-team football. Sunderland will want Young to play week in and week out, as he did at Darlington towards the back end of last season. Unlikely he will move to a club to be second choice.”

There hasn’t been a great deal of loan interest in Young reported recently, though iNews have reported the youngster was scouted by Manchester United and Manchester City last year.

However, that was prior to Young putting pen to paper on a professional contract at the Stadium of Light.

The 17-year-old won’t benefit from staying at Sunderland next season

The ‘amazing‘ goalkeeper now looks set to stay at the club, but there is no denying that he needs regular first-team football to develop.

With Patterson and Moore likely to claim the two spots in the senior squad, Sunderland now need to find a temporary home for the England U19 international.

Having made his debut in pre-season at only 16 years old, Young clearly has bags of potential and could well be Patterson’s long-term replacement.

Handling his situation correctly is vital, with both Patterson and Jordan Pickford bursting onto the scene after enjoying successful loan spells much lower down the football pyramid.
