Former Chelsea player Christian Pulisic says the perfect footballer would be a mix of Lionel Messi and Darwin Nunez

It isn’t just the European Championship that Liverpool players are involved in this summer.

The Reds have 10 players taking part at the Euros over the next month or so, as they look to end the campaign on a high.

But as well as the European tournament, there is also the small matter of the Copa America going on in the United States.

Four Liverpool stars will take part in the competition. Alexis Mac Allister will be hoping for back-to-back championships for holders Argentina, meanwhile Alisson Becker will keep goal for Brazil and the hopes of Colombia will rest largely with Luis Diaz.

The final member of the Liverpool squad turning out in the USA is comfortably the most divisive. But Uruguay’s Darwin Nunez appears to have found a fan in Christian Pulisic.

Christian Pulisic pays Darwin Nunez compliment

Nunez had a terrifically difficult end to the season with Liverpool. Without a goal in the final 10 games, question marks were raised over his future at Anfield.

But with the national team it has been a totally different story. Having hit a hat-trick for Uruguay earlier this month, Nunez now has scored in each of his past five appearances for the South Americans.

Eight goals across those games is a record that any striker would be proud of.

As Uruguay head into the Copa America under Marcelo Bielsa, Nunez could genuinely be one of the stars of the show.

That’s something that former Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic has now acknowledged. Pulisic will be hoping for glory himself while turning out on home soil for the USA.

Ahead of the tournament, the AC Milan player – who was linked with Liverpool over the years – was asked by GOAL USA to build his perfect player using attributes of those taking part in the Copa America.

The left foot was a no brainer for Pulisic “I mean Messi, okay. I didn’t even think about that!” says the 25-year-old. Asked to named the perfect right-foot for his make-believe footballer, Pulisic opted for Liverpool’s No.9.

“Darwin Nunez just scored three goals,” he says. “So I’ll go with him.” The winger went on to select Vinicius Jnr for pace, Yunus Musah for strength and himself for football IQ.

Darwin Nunez set for crucial tournament

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, it has already been decided that Nunez will stay at Liverpool next season.

Although he ended the season poorly, Arne Slot is reportedly planning ahead with Nunez as a key player.

As a result, Liverpool could really do with the 24-year-old coming to life during this tournament. That can then act as the springboard for a successful season back on Merseyside.

So far, the signs seem to point to Nunez having a good time of it with Uruguay. They’ve been in excellent form and he has been key to that.

Should they fall flat out in America though, it might be more difficult for Darwin to pick himself up at Liverpool again.

It’s a big summer for Nunez, let’s hope he can justify Pulisic’s selection.
