Chelsea signing Samu Omorodion could be very good news for £32m player - opinion

Chelsea could sign Samu Omorodion from Atletico Madrid this summer.

It has been reported that Samu Omorodion is now Chelsea’s first-choice target for the striker position and that the club have already had one offer for him turned down.

It remains to be seen if the Blues go back in for the 20-year-old.

But if they do and manage to land him, it could be a very positive development for one of their current players.

Why Chelsea are trying to sign Samu Omorodion in the first place

During the second half of last season, Nicolas Jackson was the only natural striker in Chelsea’s squad.

Had he picked up a serious injury, Mauricio Pochettino could have had a major problem on is hands.

That did not happen, though, and the 22-year-old went on to finish the campaign with 14 Premier League goals to his name.

However, there is clearly an acceptance at the club that the above cannot happen again. They need another centre-forward and are now trying to bring Omorodion in as a result.

Nicolas Jackson should not worry about Samu Omorodion’s potential arrival

Chelsea signing Omorodion would mean competition for Jackson next season.

However, if the Spaniard is the centre-forward who arrives at Stamford Bridge this summer, you would expect Jackson to be Enzo Maresca‘s first-choice No.9 in the 2023/24 campaign.

Omorodion is still very young and only scored eight goals in 34 league appearances for Alaves. Jackson is ahead of him at the moment and would probably get the nod over the Atletico man.

Had Chelsea signed Benjamin Sesko, who has decided to stay at RB Leipzig, or chosen to snap up Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, then the £32m Senegal international would probably be sweating over his place in the side.

But the Blues going after an unproven 20-year-old indicates that he is likely to be the team’s first-choice striker next season. So the club signing Omorodion could end up being very good news for him.
