'Intense preparations': Daniel Ricciardo to benefit from big RB update at Spanish Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo is set to benefit from a significant update package to his VCARB 01 at this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix.

The team will join numerous manufacturers that are likely to introduce a second significant upgrade package to their cars at the upcoming races, given the next three take place in Europe and are close to their factories.

The Visa Cash App RB team was recently tipped to be one of the teams bringing their ‘most important’ update to the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya, as it continues to improve its chances of regularly scoring points.

RB currently lie sixth in the Constructors Championship, 30 points behind Aston Martin, with Daniel Ricciardo impressing in Canada by achieving his best qualifying performance in fifth.

A clutch issue compromised his start and led to a five-second time penalty later on in the race for a jump start, ultimately leading him to finish in eighth.

‘Significant amount of work’ gone into RB updates

Speaking ahead of the race weekend in the RB team preview, RB technical director Jody Egginton detailed the extensive updates the team will bring to both cars.

“The midfield battle is incredibly tight and we are under no illusion that we must deliver well-executed events to be towards the front of this group with a chance of scoring points. There have been intensive preparations in the simulator and offline tools to prepare for this event,” said Egginton.

“A significant amount of work was put in by Faenza and Bicester to prepare and deliver an aerodynamic update consisting of a floor, bodywork and rear wing for both cars, to provide a measurable performance benefit. As a result of having this update, the Friday sessions will be especially busy, to gather and process as much data as possible and get ready for Saturday onwards.”

The team will be looking for the update package to deliver the same performance gains as their first in Miami, where Ricciardo finished fourth in the Sprint race and Tsunoda scored five points across the weekend.
