Report: Matt Ritchie may get his wish after all ahead of Newcastle United release

A queue of sorts could be forming to sign Matt Ritchie ahead of his Newcastle United release.

It was confirmed in May that Matt Ritchie would be leaving Newcastle United when his contract expires, alongside the likes of Paul Dummett and Loris Karius.

It is an emotional exit for Ritchie, who has been at St James’ Park since 2016. He has been a key figure on Tyneside, both on and off the pitch. By the time Eddie Howe arrived, Ritchie’s importance was mainly behind the scenes, and it was even suggested that he could get a new contract this summer.

But that was no longer viable when it emerged that Newcastle would not be in Europe next season.

Portsmouth change their Matt Ritchie stance

Following tributes from the likes of Isaac Hayden, Ritchie is now looking for a new club.

A move to the Championship could be on the horizon, with Watford rumoured to be keen.

Now a new club has entered the race to sign the 34-year-old, with The News reporting that Portsmouth are considering signing the soon-to-be free agent.

That represents a change of heart from Pompey, who were reportedly not interested in Ritchie when it first emerged that he would be leaving Newcastle United.

It was claimed that a move back to Fratton Park was not on the cards as he did not fit their recruitment model.

Matt Ritchie’s dream could come true

Now it would appear that Portsmouth are reassessing the situation, which will be music to the ears of Ritchie.

He is from Gosport on the south coast, and came through the Portsmouth academy. He even made his Premier League debut for them back when they were in the top flight in 2010.

Ritchie has previously stated that he would love to return to Portsmouth, and now he has that opportunity as he searches for a new club. It is great to hear that they are at least considering a deal, given how openly he has spoke about wanting to play for them again.

It may all come down to finances, as Ritchie has been earning Premier League money for a long time. He is not going to get that at Portsmouth, who will be taking a financial risk if they bring in a player who turns 35 in September.

But they would be getting a very experienced player and someone who will drive up standards on the training pitch, which could be vital as they return to the Championship following promotion from League One.

What is happening with the other players Newcastle have released

Away from Ritchie, one of the other senior players who Newcastle have released has found a new club.

It has been confirmed that Kell Watts, who played once for the Magpies, has signed a two-year contract with League One side Cambridge United.

Elsewhere, Paul Dummett, Loris Karius and Jeff Hendrick are yet to find new clubs ahead of the 2024/25 season.
