'It blew up in his face': Tyler Adams feels he let one player down during his Leeds United spell

Tyler Adams has admitted feeling like he let one player down during his time at Leeds United, speaking a year after his exit from Elland Road and his move to Premier League side Bournemouth.

The USA skipper has endured a dismal spell with injury, suffering a hamstring issue in Leeds training and missing the last 12 games of the season in which Leeds were relegated back to the Championship.

He joined Bournemouth last summer for a fee north of £20m, with Angus Kinnear making it clear that he would not be on the Christmas card list at Leeds having forced a move to Bournemouth after the drop.

Missing Adams for the last 12 games was a huge blow for Leeds, with Marc Roca and on-loan Weston McKennie tasked with sorting the midfield at Elland Road, struggling to do the defensive work of Adams.

Adams was key in getting a deal done for USA teammate McKennie in January 2023, as his fellow midfielder joined The Whites on loan from Juventus until the end of the season with a permanent option.

But McKennie really struggled in a Leeds shirt and fans vented their frustration out on the on-loan man. Considering his improved form for Juventus this season, it does question why he failed so badly at Leeds.

The Mail report that Adams was key in getting a deal done for McKennie and he told the English outlet: “I got injured and it blew up in his face. It was incredibly hard for me, I feel in a way that I let him down.”

McKennie could now be on his way back to English football

Some reports are suggesting that McKennie could be set for a second chance in the Premier League after flopping so badly at Elland Road. Aston Villa could be about to strike a swap deal for McKennie.

Leeds fans have responded to those reports on social media. It would be a deal that sees McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior move to The Midlands, while Brazil star Douglas Luiz could be on his way to Italy.

Unai Emery will be hoping that he can do a better job in English football, than he did at Leeds. His form at Juventus during 2023-24, largely as a wing-back at times, will certainly give Emery some hope.
