The international winger Celtic could buy as competition for Luis Palma - opinion

The thing I love about this job is that I am constantly thinking about players who could help improve the Celtic first team.

With Brendan Rodgers looking to spend his Champions League millions this summer, the market that is open to Celtic is huge.

With a good budget to spend and the enticement of participating in the group stages, players will find a move to Glasgow very appealing this summer.

But as always with Celtic, there are the parameters of a budget that needs to be worked within so whilst the club is cash-rich, there are limits to the type of player Rodgers can go for.

But I reckon this next suggestion would add quality and depth to a Celtic attack that it desperately needs it,

Jón Dagur Thorsteinsson could be perfect for Celtic

Jón Dagur Thorsteinsson recently hit the headlines this summer after scoring a winner for his country in the 1-0 win over England at Wembley.

However, that is not the only reason Rodgers should look at the Icelandic winger. Thorsteinsson currently plays in the Belgian top flight with OH Leuven.

In 79 appearances for the Belgian side, Thorsteinsson has scored 19 goals and created 11 assists to add to his career tally of 64 goals and 41 assists.

Versatile, the Iceland winger can play in both flanks, as an attacking midfielder and has been known to play up front although he is predominantly a left-sided attacking player. [Transfermarkt]

Thorsteinsson helped to save Leuven from the drop this season as the club’s top goalscorer in the league with seven and was joint top in his team for assists.

With an xG of 7.2 goals for the season, the 25-year-old was one of the relegation-threatened teams’ most potent attacking threats.

Thorsteinsson was also one of Leuven’s top dribblers with an average of 1.4 per game but did miss the most big chances with eight off-target this season. [Fotmob]

There is clearly talent there and a big-game player and I believe that the 37-cap Icelandic international would offer some good competition to help push Luis Palma next season.
