Comedian Ricky Gervais has been called “ruthless” over a Justin Timberlake joke in the wake of the music star’s arrest.
Justin Timberlake has been part of pop culture for decades. He was a main cast member of Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club in his youth before expanding into a solo music career with the debut studio album Justified in 2002. Since then, he’s dominated the charts with hits like Mirrors, and he’s even established himself as a Hollywood actor in acclaimed movies like The Social Network and Inside Llewyn Davis. Unexpectedly, those achievements have taken a backseat in the current conversation. The focus is now firmly on his recent arrest and the mugshot released in the aftermath of a drink-driving charge. If you didn’t think anybody would attempt to wrestle humor out of that, perhaps you’ve underestimated English comedian Ricky Gervais.

While driving in the Hamptons in New York State, Justin was pulled over by authorities after failing to stop at a stop sign in the early hours of Tuesday, June 18th 2024. Sky News reports that court documents detail “A strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from [Justin’s] breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”
Timberlake’s attorney has said the star was only charged with a DWI are refusing a breathalyzer test.
As more and more fans are scrolling along on social media only to be met with the musician’s mugshot, Ricky has stepped in to make light of the situation with a joke.
“Did you get the bottle of Dutch Barn Vodka I sent you the other day?” the 62-year-old comedian and actor tweeted directly at Justin.
Dutch Barn Vodka is the leading brand of Ellers Farm Distillery, an alcohol manufacturer whom Ricky became co-owner of following an announcement in November 2023.
Not only is Ricky promoting his vodka, but his trademark sense of humor too. And as expected of his humor at this point, it’s divided once again…

Ricky has become well known far and wide for his unvarnished comedic stylings, no stranger to facing backlash for jokes considered controversial and offensive by some—and loved by others.
“Things like Gervais trolling Timberlake is what makes Twitter so great,” one reacted, whereas another argued it was “too soon” to be making fun of the situation.
Somebody called the joke “ruthless,” and perhaps that could be argued no matter the side of the fence you’re reading from.
Another praised it as “the best post on X/Twitter today, hands down.” And to the person who suggested it was too soon? A fan had an answer locked and loaded right away: “Not for Ricky.”
Justin was reportedly having dinner at a restaurant with some friends before he was pulled over by police and then arraigned in Sag Harbor, as established from a Suffolk County district attorney’s office statement. With his next court date penciled in for July 26, Ricky’s fans will be waiting to see if the SexyBack singer bites back or dishes out some humor of his own.
