'That does tell us something': What Man City will do with Stefan Ortega if Ederson is sold - journalist

Speculation continues to swirl about Ederson, with the Manchester City goalkeeper a target for clubs in Saudi Arabia.

The Brazil international was thought to be set to sign a new contract with the club earlier this year.

But the picture has now changed, and there is a possibility that City could lose their £35 million signing this summer after seven years as the number one at the Etihad Stadium.

Ederson has enjoyed a terrific spell at the club, winning 15 major trophies.

But it has been reported now that City would actually be more shocked if the 30-year-old stayed at the club.

It is going to be interesting to see what City do if Ederson does indeed depart. Manchester City News caught up with HITC journalist Graeme Bailey to find out what could happen in that instance.

Ederson is currently mulling over interest in him from Saudi Arabia.

The South American stopper reportedly has the chance to become the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world by moving to the SPL.

The SPL has already had previous success in luring players from City, with Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte moving last summer.

And Ederson could be the next, and City fans have been wondering if the club will move for a new number one, or turn to Stefan Ortega.

In the eyes of transfer expert Graeme Bailey, there is a strong possibility that Ortega will become the new number one in the event of Ederson’s departure, given he recently signed a new deal.

He told us: “He (Ederson) is looking at the situation. Is he ready to move to Saudi? I wouldn’t rule it out.

“Obviously with Ortega signing his new deal, I think there was a reason behind City moving quickly to tie him down. He wanted first-team football, they’ve made sure he hasn’t gone so I think that does tell us something.

“There would be a very good chance of him becoming number one. And then maybe them signing a younger version as the number two. They’ve looked at someone like Anthony Patterson in the past.

“I’d be surprised, if Ederson wasn’t number one, if Ortega wasn’t given that chance, given how impressive he was last year.”

Ortega deserves number one shot

At the moment, it seems it could go either way with Ederson.

But it could well be that there is no smoke without fire, and that the new contract signed by Ortega is a sign that Ederson will be on his way.

Ortega may well not have agreed to fresh terms if he had not been given assurances about game time. It has been reported for quite some time that it is his goal to become a number one.

So it is very possible Ederson could go. That would be a shame, given how integral Ederson has been to the way City have played and the uniqueness he brings in terms of his ball-playing.

But Ortega has shown his quality for City when called upon, and it would be no less than he deserves for him to become the new number one.
