Former England boss Sam Allardyce has just made an interesting claim about Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and his involvement at Euro 2024.
Conor Gallagher, 24, is one of several Blues players participating at this summer’s Euros tournament.
Gallagher is part of an England squad deemed by many as one of the favourites, albeit there were some questions marks to come out of the 1-0 win against Serbia in the opening group stage match.
The Chelsea midfielder was used as a substitute during Sunday’s victory over Serbia to help see it out.
Sam Allardyce claim about Conor Gallagher
Sam Allardyce has claimed he thinks Chelsea’s Gallagher is the type of midfielder that needs to be bumped up into the starting line-up against the better nations later in the tournament.
When discussing England’s midfield on No Tippy Tappy Football, Allardyce said: “If you want a defensive role midfield-wise because you’re playing against a much better side, you play Conor Gallagher instead of Trent [Alexander Arnold] because Conor will give you that energy in terms of winning knockdowns, but also shutting and closing the opposition down.
“I worked with him when he was young at West Brom and for a team that struggled so badly this lad never got his head down. He was only 19 and he was first on our team sheet because of the fact he did the hard yards. He did the unseen stuff…
“Against a better team, it would be him. You’d need to do a specific job on say [Ilkay] Gundogan if they play Germany. Say, ‘ Conor, mark him out the game’. I think he can do that.”

It’s no coincidence that every manager that works with Gallagher seems to pick him and trust him.
The Chelsea midfielder will run harder than anyone on the pitch, which is why he was so effecttive last season at club level under Mauricio Pochettino.
