Michigan State is gaining a much-needed specialist for its football program with the commitment of Jack Wentz, a transfer long snapper with four years of eligibility remaining.
Prior to the commitment of Lentz, Michigan State had just one longsnapper on its roster in James Madison transfer Kaden Schickel, who beat out Drew Wilson for the role of No. 1 long snapper for the Spartans during spring football. Wilson transferred out of the Spartan program following spring football.
Wentz, who began his collegiate career at Division 2 Lenoir-Rhyne in North Carolina, announced his commitment to Michigan State via social media on Wednesday.
A 6-2, 210-pound long snapper, Lentz did not play college football in 2023. He did, however, work hard to refine his craft during the past year, working with specialty trainers Jacob Enns and Kyle Stelter.
Wentz is currently on campus at Michigan State and was spotted among the current Spartan players on hand for recent football camps. One of the high school long snappers working out at a recent Spartan prospect camp, credited Wentz for helping him refine his snapping technique.
Wentz was ranked the No. 34 long snapper in the Class of 2024 by Chris Rubio, founder of Rubio Long Snapping. Rubio tabbed Wentz as a FBS caliber long snapper after evaluating the Michigan State commitment at a long snapping camp in Wentz’s home state of Georgia.
Rubio wrote the following of Wentz after watching him perform at his Georgia camp last summer.
“Jack Wentz showed me a lot of good things at the Rubio Long Snapping Fall Camp in GA on October 15th, 2023. His form is very good and he is able to use his whole body well to get some good speed on the ball. Easily can pass an eyeball test from a college coach and he is a hard working Long Snapper. Locking down his spiral is going to give him more consistent speed and a more catchable ball. Very accurate and consistent Long Snapper that will make a college coach very happy in the near future. Really smooth and I look forward to seeing him dominate at VEGAS XLIII in January.”
