One of the top four-star linebackers on Oregon’s board was in Eugene this past weekend. After a slight delay getting back home we were finally able to catch up with IMG Academy (Fla.) linebacker Gavin Nix.

The 5-foot-11, 225-pounder is the No. 152 ranked recruit in the On3 Industry Rankings. He is the No. 17 ranked linebacker nationally.

Right now Nix is looking hardest at his three official visits, Oregon, Miami and Florida State. However Notre Dame, Ohio State and Stanford are also in the mix. As for a decision date, nothing is concrete but he’s targeting a commitment prior to the start of his senior season.

We caught up with Nix to talk about his weekend visit to Eugene and more.

Recapping the Activities:

“The first day was mostly at the business school. We spent a lot of time there because that’s what I want for my major and they have one of the best business schools in the country. We saw some of the freshman housing too and walked around the campus. The second day was a lot of fun. It was a lot of football meetings and then we all went over to coach Lanning’s house. His house is beautiful, one of those dream houses. We played games and watch the UFC fights, basically just hanging out together.”

What Stood out Most:

“I met these guys called the ‘entrepreneur program.’ It’s a big collaboration that works to put ideas together and help student-athletes build their platforms and develop their brands. It was really interesting to meet with them.”

On the Defense:

“I loved all the defensive meetings. Learning about Oregon’s defensive style and the coaches have some of the best resumes in the business. Coach Lanning and B Mike are really good coaches with tons of experience with players like me. That really attracts me to Oregon. I trust them to develop me and help me pursue my dreams. They have such a great knowledge of the game.”

On Distance:

“The distance is kind of a thing. Coach Lupoi emphasizes short-term sacrifice for long-term success. It it was that much of a factor though I wouldn’t have made the trip.”
