Report: Whether Anthony Gordon will start for England tonight after Phil Foden criticism

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is hoping to make his international tournament debut for England against Denmark.

The Three Lions kicked off Euro 2024 with a 1-0 win over Serbia, but they did it without Anthony Gordon.

The Newcastle United winger was an unused substitute on Sunday, much to the surprise of pundit Jamie Carragher. England needed some proper width as the game went on against Serbia, yet Gareth Southgate did not turn to Gordon.

Instead, he persevered with Phil Foden on the left.

Calls for Anthony Gordon to come into the England XI

However, the Manchester City star really struggled to have an impact, having been denied the chance to play in his preferred position. He is better centrally, but the position he should have occupied went to Jude Bellingham, who was England’s man of the match.

Given Foden’s struggles, there have been calls for Southgate to make a change. Fans and pundits have suggested that the England team should be tweaked, with Alan Shearer stating that Gordon should come into the side for Trent Alexander-Arnold. That would result in Bellingham playing deeper, Foden moving inside and the Newcastle star occupying the left flank.

That seems like a sensible solution, but it is one that Southgate appears set to ignore.

What Gareth Southgate plans to do for England vs Denmark

According to the Telegraph, Southgate is going to name an unchanged starting XI for England’s second game against Denmark on Thursday evening.

That means that Foden will continue on the left, while Gordon will be a substitute for the second game in a row.

That is disappointing, but it does not come as a surprise. Southgate is a manager who will not pay attention to the background noise, as he prepares to give Foden another chance on the left of attack.

In truth, it is not a major shock to see that Southgate is planning to stick with the same team. While Toon fans are eager to see Gordon in an England shirt, he will have to wait for an opportunity off the bench.

Hopefully that opportunity comes his way, as Gordon is a player who can have a big impact at the Euros.

Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier to start for England

But while one Newcastle player will not start, another is set to.

With Southgate not making any changes, that will mean that Kieran Trippier starts in Frankfurt. He will be deployed at left-back, with Luke Shaw still unavailable.

Given that he is playing out of position, there is a lot of pressure on Trippier. The fact that he is being used out there has led to some concern from fans, but he clearly has Southgate’s trust.

The 33-year-old was solid against Serbia, and will hope for another steady display versus Denmark.
