Ex-Gers goalie signs up for Spanish revolution at ambitious Premier League club - Romano

It takes something a little bit special to hold the moniker of Rangers goalkeeper.

Over the years the Ibrox faithful have been spoiled by a number of glorious talents between the sticks and it’s a tradition which doesn’t show signs of going anywhere.

Whilst Andy Goram and Allan McGregor remain the pinnacle of the club’s goalkeeping prowess, the likes of Peter McCloy, Chris Woods, and Stefan Klos make some top five.

Even current number one Jack Butland is doing his best to earn his spot amongst the eternal Rangers greats.

Now, one former Rangers goalkeeper who never quite got his chance at the top level with the club is closing in on a new deal in the Premier League.

Foderingham signs Premier League deal

Rangers fans always had a fondness for Wes Foderingham at Ibrox.

The signing of the former Swindon goalkeeper came at the beginning of the Mark Warburton reign in 2015, largely considered a crucial moment in the club’s return from the financial ruin of 2012.

An important player in some big moments at Rangers over the years – not least that famous penalty kicks Scottish Cup victory over Celtic in 2016 – the goalie would go on to spend five years at the club.

Deposed between the sticks by Allan McGregor in 2018, Foderingham’s back-up status belied his goalkeeping ability and he’d eventually move down south.

Having just come off the back of a four-year stint with Sheffield United, the stopper is a bonafide Premier League level goalie and a solid option for teams south of the border.

Now, Foderingham has signed a deal with West Ham United in the Premier League as Wes joins Julen Lopetegui’s Spanish revolution by signing a two-year deal in east London

Rangers goalkeeper upheaval on horizon

Whilst Wes Foderingham might find minutes hard to come by at West Ham, the deal is a testament to the 33-year-old’s footballing ability.

The Hammers are well-stocked in the position with Polish stopper Łukasz Fabiański and French option Alphonse Areola already at the club.

Rangers too face their own upheaval in the goalkeeping position this summer.

The club are reportedly braced for interest in last season’s star player Jack Butland from the English Premier League.

Academy stopper Robby McCrorie is also set to leave Ibrox in search of first team football, even if the club have lost a bargaining chip in their pursuit of Aberdeen’s Connor Barron.

With Jon McLaughlin also leaving the club at the end of his Rangers contract, the Gers are also closing in on a deal for Scotland international Liam Kelly.
