Gers to strike fresh deal with ex-Ibrox midfielder as journalist provides Dutch target update

Boyhood bluenose Alex Rae has never done Rangers a bad turn when called upon by the club.

The former Sunderland and Wolves midfielder had to bide his time to get a chance to play for his heroes as a footballer and spent two years with Rangers in his mid-30s.

The first season was particularly successful for Alex Rae, who played a key role in bringing the title home to Ibrox via Helicopter Sunday.

Whilst his time at Rangers was brief, the midfielder has made no bones about his allegiances and even managed to win the likes of Paul Ince over to the blue side of Glasgow.

Now, eight months on from when he answered the Rangers call again the midfielder has reportedly received some news about his future.

Rae Rangers contract update

After Rangers sacked Michael Beale the club called upon Steven Davis to briefly take the reins at Ibrox.

The Ulsterman faced off against Aris Limassol on Europa League duties before introducing a certain Ross McCausland to the team against St Mirren.

But Davo wasn’t tasked with doing it alone and Alex Rae was also called upon to reinforce the Rangers backroom staff.

The thing is, whilst Davis stepped back to focus on his fitness upon the appointment of Philippe Clement, Alex Rae stuck around.

And now the former Ibrox midfielder looks set to be around for even longer after convincing Philippe Clement of a place in an impending backroom reshuffle.

There had been some conjecture surrounding Alex Rae’s future with the former Dundee and St Mirren manager’s short-term contract up in the summer.

At least that’s according to Chris Jack, who told the Rangers Review that Rae is set to sign a new deal.

An excerpt from a recent interview reads:

“There has been speculation about Alex Rae’s position as well but that, as far as I understand, won’t change next season and the club still see the benefit of having someone with his knowledge of the Scottish game and of Rangers on the staff.”

Dutch coach move ‘dismissed’

The news come against the backdrop of public appeals from Philippe Clement for extra assistance in his backroom staff.

The Rangers manager told journalists following the collapse at the end of the Scottish Premiership season that he needed greater ‘delegation’.

With the Rangers medical department also set for an overhaul – injuries having devastated the Rangers squad for more than two years – change is coming in the backroom.

But one heavily linked Dutch coach won’t be joining the Gers according to Chris Jack.

At the end of May Rangers were strongly linked with a move to make Dutch coach Andries Ulderink Clement’s new assistant alongside Stephan van der Heyden.

Voetbal International also reported that Rangers had failed in an attempt to bring video analyst John Stegeman to the club.

However Jack claims that the links to Ulderink were ‘dismissed’ at the time and reckons it would be a ‘surprise’ if a move was to materialise.

An excerpt from the article reads:

“The links to Ulderink were pretty quickly dismissed when they first emerged earlier this year so it would be surprise if that move was to happen a few months on.”
