Sam Surridge plays in 'unusual' position during MLS game last night and scores twice

Nottingham Forest allowed several players to leave the club following promotion to the Premier League and last summer was the same.

The Reds haven’t really been able to have a settled squad since winning promotion and hopefully, that can change this transfer window.

One man who was instrumental in the promotion-winning season but struggled in the Premier League is Sam Surridge.

He made 26 appearances forForest but managed just one Premier League goal and scored two goals in the League Cup against Grimsby.

Surridge started just one game for the Reds in the Premier League and was allowed to leave in July 2023 on a permanent basis.

He signed for Nashville SC in the MLS and it would appear that he’s going from strength to strength with his current club.

Surridge stars in ‘unusual’ position as Nashville SC claim win

The Reds did see the very best of Surridge when the club were in the Championship.

He scored nine goals during the second half of 2021/22 as Forest claimed promotion via the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley.

However, Nashville are really seeing the best of Surridge in their colours and last night he was in fine form once again.

The 25-year-old took his talk to nine for the season with a brace during a 2-1 win over Toronto FC in the MLS.

After the game, however, he spoke about something that felt strange during the game with the manager asking him to play on the left wing.

He told The Tennessean: “The first one, I opened my body up, far corner. Then the second one, I’ve been working on that finish a little bit in training and yeah it came off tonight.

“It was a bit of an unusual position for me, I haven’t played that probably in a whole. But it was something that I felt I grew into and enjoyed helping the team do that.”

Forest were right to let Surridge leave

Although some supporters aren’t convinced that Surridge got a proper Premier League chance at Forest, the club were right to offload him.

It says a lot that at his peak he’s headed over to the MLS and if he was that good in the top flight, surely an English club would have come calling for him.

Still, Surridge was brilliant as Forest won promotion and for that, he does deserve a lot of credit.

Surridge scored some very important goals during his time at Forest and it’s good to see him enjoying football once again.

It was perhaps strange that Surridge was shunted out wide last night but clearly it didn’t matter given that he scored two goals.

Forest had to balance the books somehow and unfortunately for Surridge, he proved one of the fallguys.

Given that Forest have remained in the Premier League for two seasons, the decision to offload him looks justified.

However, that won’t stop supporters wishing a player who did his very best for the club well for the future.
