What happens if England beat Denmark

What happens if England beat Denmark? The Three Lions take on the Danes at UEFA EURO 2024 with a chance of winning Group C in the event of victory.

Three points would ensure Gareth Southgate’s side are certain to finish above Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia, but what would that mean in terms of England‘s Round of 16 opponent and prize money?

Let’s take a look…

What happens if England beat Denmark?

Potential Round of 16 opponent

Firstly, victory over Denmark would secure top spot in Group C – meaning England will be treated with a supposedly easier Round of 16 clash against one of the best third placed sides from Group D, Group E or Group F, according to TNT Sports.

As things stand, Poland sit third in Group D, Belgium in Group E and the Czech Republic in Group F.

TNT Sports state that England would play Poland if the Three Lions beat Denmark and win Group C

Prize money

England secured €1m (£845,759) in prize money for the 1-0 win over Serbia, and will receive the same amount of cash if Denmark are defeated as well, as seen on UEFA’s official website.

Not only that, but as qualification for the Round of 16 would be secured in the event of victory, UEFA would also award England a further €1.5m (£1.3m) in prize money.

What happens if England lose to Denmark?

If England suffer defeat to Denmark, it would put the Danes above the Three Lions in Group C on four points with a game to play – although nothing would be concretely decided.

Having drawn 1-1 to Slovenia in their opening game, Denmark cannot win Group C today by beating England, although it would put Kasper Hjulmand’s side in pole position to secure top spot with a win over Serbia in their final game.

In terms of prize money, it goes without saying that England would not receive the €1m (£845,759) in prize money, nor the £1.3m for making it into the Round of 16 – for now, at least.

For what it’s worth, a draw would net England €500,000 (£422,879).

A defeat to Denmark would also potentially see England finish second in Group C depending on what happens in Tuesday’s round of Group C fixtures – meaning a clash against Germany is likely to await, again according to TNT Sports.
