The Florida State Seminoles saw their run in Omaha and the College World Series ended at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers. Following the game, head coach Link Jarrett opened up on how hard it was to even make it to that point and go on a deep run.
Jarrett explained that baseball is a game with plenty of things that can’t be controlled. Good contact can end in an out. An umpire can miss a call. Because of that, it’s difficult to even make it as far as Florida State was able to go.

“That’s how hard it is to get here,” Link Jarrett said. “You have to have so many things go correctly in these short-spurt postseason events that we have in play in college baseball. It’s one lineout in a Regional or Super Regional or something quirky that happens and you’re not even here.”
In the final game of Florida State’s 2024 season, the Seminoles lost to the Tennessee Volunteers by a score of 7-2. In the came, the Volunteers jumped out to an early lead and, even when Florida State had its chances, the Seminoles weren’t able to make a comeback.
“So, it is part of, I guess, the beauty of the sport is sometimes the intent in how you perform in that moment when you’re hitting or pitching may not always get you the result because there are variables that are not controllable,” Jarrett said. “And where you hit line drives and how hard you hit them, that’s part of the beauty of the game. And I think it’s what makes it so unique.”
Link Jarrett is a native of Tallahassee who played at Florida State from 1991-1994. He later got into coaching and had head coaching stops at UNC Greensboro and Notre Dame before coming to Florida State for the 2023 season. By his second year there, he took the Seminoles to the College World Series.
“Now, clearly, I mean, they’re positioning their players and know what they’re doing. There’s still a variable in it that’s very difficult to control. To watch Marco [Dinges] and some of the guys up and down the lineup that just absolutely — from an exit-velocity standpoint — probably could do no more with not much to show,” Jarrett said.
“It’s the beauty of the game. It also is what makes it very difficult when you go through that. And I feel like at times you’re doing exactly what you set out to do and the result doesn’t match.”
Throughout the postseason, Florida State and Link Jarrett had made it clear they wanted to win the school’s first national championship for the legendary coach Mike Martin in the wake of his death. Now, that’s something for Florida State to strive for next season.
