‘If I’m honest’: Fernando Alonso has one ‘hope’ to hide Aston Martin ‘weak point’ in Spanish GP

Fernando Alonso has admitted that ‘if I’m honest’ the two-time Formula 1 champion has one ‘hope’ to hide Aston Martin’s ‘weak point’ in this week’s Spanish Grand Prix.

The 42-year-old is racing on home soil for the 26th time as an F1 driver in 2024 following his first back in 2001. Alonso has driven in the Spanish GP at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya 21 times, plus five European GPs in Valencia. He has even won on home soil three times yet.

Alonso won the Spanish GP for Renault in 2006 and with Ferrari in 2013, plus the European GP in 2012. His last victory in Barcelona also still marks Alonso’s most recent win in F1. And the Aston Martin racer does not expect to take his 33rd career win at the 2024 edition, too.

Fernando Alonso ‘hopes’ rain affects the Spanish GP to help Aston Martin

Fifth place in the Saudi Arabian GP during round two of the 2024 Formula 1 season remains Alonso and Aston Martin’s best result so far this term. Now, if the Oviedo native is ‘honest’, he is hoping for rain for the Silverstone squad to have the best chance of being competitive.

Alonso fears the AMR-24’s lack of speed will hold Aston Martin back in round 10 of the year. But should rain hit Spain this Sunday, then the 2005 and 2006 drivers’ champion believes his hopes will increase. Lance Stroll has also not finished higher than his P6 in the Australian GP.

“If I’m honest, I hope it rains this Sunday,” Alonso said, via quotes by Marca. “Our weak point is speed. When it rains, it’s Russian roulette and you never know what’s going to happen. It will be an opportunity for us.”

What is the weather forecast for the 2024 F1 Spanish GP?

The official Formula 1 weather forecast for the 2024 Spanish GP at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya predicts conditions that should disappoint Aston Martin ace Alonso, though. The pre-event forecast is for cloudy conditions, with any rain likely to fall before the Grand Prix.

Race day carries the biggest chance of rain all weekend at 40%, with a 20% chance of rain in qualifying. But the forecast predicts moderate rain showers to arrive in the morning before clearing up for the Spanish GP. Yet rain could affect qualifying with it expected from midday.

Alonso could make use of any wet conditions to qualify well for Aston Martin at the Spanish GP. He has not secured a pole position since the 2012 German GP. But Alonso qualified third for the F1 Sprint at the Chinese GP this April after torrential conditions affected the session.
