Giovani Lo Celso reacts after what Cristian Romero did for Argentina at the Copa America last night

Tottenham Hotspur’s Giovani Lo Celso was left stunned by what he saw his club and country teammate Cristian Romero do against Canada on Thursday night.

A number of Tottenham‘s players find themselves representing their nations this summer in international tournaments.

The main focus back at home will naturally be on this summer’s Euros with England looking to finally bring it home.

However, the Copa America is also underway now with Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero looking to defend their title.

The reigning Copa America and World Cup champions got off to a winning start on Thursday night when they beat Canada 2-0.

And it seems Romero may well have put in a typical Romero performance with some of his teammates left hailing the centre-back following the game.

Giovani Lo Celso wowed by Cristian Romero’s Copa America display

Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez got Argentina’s campaign up and running on Thursday before their lead was doubled by Lautaro Martinez.

A comfortable opening victory for the reigning champions is exactly what they will have wanted to ease themselves into the competition.

But it seems their defensive solidity did not go unnoticed with Lo Celso and some of the other Argentina players waxing lyrical about Romero after the game.

Having played the entire 90 minutes on Thursday, Romero posted on his Instagram following the game, saying: “What a beautiful group this is, what a team”.

To which a number of his teammates responded. Lo Celso replied: “You play something else”.

Whilst Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo De Paul suggested Romero sets the example as he weighed in by saying: “You set sail, Cristian”.

Cristian Romero vs Canada in numbers

Spurs fans will be all too familiar with the level of performance Romero can put in with the Argentine stepping up his game even further under Postecoglou last season.

The Argentine’s disciplinary record dramatically improved having been made the vice-captain with a new sense of responsibility on his shoulders.

And he continued from where he left off with Spurs with his display on Thursday night.

  • 90 minutes played
  • 3 clearances
  • 1 interception
  • 6 tackles
  • 0 fouls
  • 108 touches
  • 98% pass accuracy
  • 7/8 long balls

Although the opposition may not have been of the highest quality, having made six tackles, it goes to show Romero was not exactly a quiet man in the Argentina defence.

Spurs fans will just be hoping he can get through the tournament unscathed.
