Newbury’s Girls light up Barcelona in youth football tournament

The Newbury District PSFA (Primary School Football Association) Girls side had a successful trip to Barcelona last week, facing sides from across Europe in the Barcelona Girls Cup.

Held at the Complex Esportiu Futbol Salou in Southern Catalonia, the squad competed in the seven-a-side category for twelve year olds.

Newbury District were placed in Group B, kicking off with a comfortable three nil win against Irish side Kilnamanagh AFC.

Next up was another Irish contender, Railway Union FC, who the Newbury girls dismantled by thirteen goals to nil.

Having already won the group, the girls faced French side USC Léognan Football from just south of Bordeaux, dispatching them six nil.

A semi-final saw a more familiar opponent, as they faced a Swindon Town side in a tight affair, winning by two goals to one.

The final saw Newbury District face FC Evolution, a football academy from Essex who defeated the girls 2-1.

Despite missing out on the trophy, the girls enjoyed an experience which will surely aid their development in the years to come.

There were individual rewards for Freya Smith, who won the golden glove and Isla Ladds, who took home the golden boot with eleven goals from five games.
