'I remember': Gary Neville noticed what Phil Foden did in the 40th minute as England struggled vs Denmark last night

Three of Manchester City’s English players are currently representing the Three Lions at the 2024 European Championship.

With two group games played, England won their opening match against Serbia 1-0 and recently drew 1-1 against Denmark.

In Thursday’s game, the Three Lions had fewer shots than Denmark (16 vs 12) and entered the final third of the pitch on fewer occasions than their opponents (56 vs 48).

All three of City’s English players in the squad, Phil Foden, John Stones and Kyle Walker, have started both matches for Gareth Southgate’s side.

After the recent match against Denmark, Gary Neville highlighted one thing he saw Foden do in the first half that he felt ended up being one of the few positive points in the game.

Gary Neville highlights important thing Phil Foden did in England vs Denmark

While assessing England’s 1-1 draw on ITV, Neville had this to say about what he saw Foden do.

He said: “There was a moment in the first half after 40 minutes for about two minutes where Phil Foden went and got the ball off the back four and got us playing.

“Because he could see that we needed somebody in there to get the ball on the half turn and get us moving.

“That’s the only time I remember in the whole game where we looked like we were half comfortable.”

Foden was very busy against Denmark

Even though the City star still started in a wide-left role against Denmark, the 24-year-old found himself getting on the ball in midfield, as he does for Pep Guardiola’s side.

In the 69 minutes he was on the pitch, Foden accurately completed 27 of the 30 passes he attempted, racked up four shots at goal in total and successfully completed four of the five dribbles he went on.

Now that Neville felt the need to highlight what the City man did in the first half as being something that helped England get the ball moving towards the Denmark goal, we feel that this showcases just how important Foden is for the Three Lions when given a free role in a central position.
