Basketball: Japan sweeps Australia in women's Olympic warm-up series

Japan completed a morale-boosting two-game sweep of world No. 3 Australia with a 95-87 win Friday in the women's basketball Olympic warm-up series in Sapporo.

Japan, ranked ninth in the world, led 50-43 at halftime and held off a comeback attempt by Australia at Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center, also known as Hokkai Kitayell.

Saki Hayashi scored a team-high 19 points for Japan. Evelyn Mawuli followed with 13 a day after her 20 points led the host country to a 96-85 Game 1 victory.

The Japanese women, who lost to the United States in the Olympic final in 2021, are scheduled to face New Zealand in Tokyo on July 4 and 6.

Japan needs to narrow down its roster from the current 16 players to 12 for the Paris Olympics.
