Cesc Fabregas has claimed that £220k-a-week Man City player could become a legend for his country

Manchester City have numerous players in their current squad who could be considered as current or future club legends.

Having won the Treble and become the first side to lift four Premier League trophies in a row, the players in Pep Guardiola’s squad have etched their names in City history over the past few years.

Now though, a significant number of the City squad are representing their countries in the 2024 European Championship.

With that in mind, one former top-flight and international star has shared his thoughts on one of City’s current stars and whether he has what it takes to become a legend for his country as well as his club.

Cesc Fabregas says Rodri needs more time to become a Spain legend

In a recent video shared on BBC Sport’s TikTok page, Cesc Fabregas was asked which of Spain’s current squad members would get into the team that won Euro 2012.

After only picking Dani Carvajal, the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder was then asked if Rodri would potentially be another player that would get into the 2012 Spain side, to which he said this in response.

He said: “Well, there was Xabi Alonso and [Sergio] Busquets so I think he still needs a bit more time.”

Rodri is on his way to becoming a Spain legend

Fabregas isn’t the first former Premier League player who knows what it takes to win for club and country to share his thoughts on the City star, as Patrick Vieira recently said that Rodri is his favourite midfielder in the world right now.

Given how Alonso and Busquets are considered to be legends of Spanish football and two of the best midfielders over the past 20 years or so, it’s understandable why Fabregas, who played with both, was reluctant to put Rodri in the same category as them.

However, having won four Premier League titles and the Champions League with City as well as the UEFA Nations League with Spain, we feel that the £220k-a-week midfielder is certainly on his way to achieving legendary status.

In fact, if Rodri helps his side win the 2024 European Championship, we feel that this would put him in the conversation to be compared with some of Spain’s legendary midfielders such as Alonso and Busquets.
