The Slovak government considers the actions of the previous administration, which provided military assistance to Ukraine including MiG-29 jets and air defense systems, as an act of treason, according to Deputy Defense Minister Igor Melicher.
The agency notes that the Defense Ministry will initiate criminal cases against former Minister Jaroslav Naď and the government of the day.
"They relate to suspicions of treason, abuse of authority, and violation of property management duties," the journalists write.
Melicher clarified that the Slovak government will file three criminal lawsuits against the government of Eduard Heger as a collective body and one separately against the former defense minister.
What is it about
In March 2023, the interim government of Eduard Heger decided to provide Ukraine with 13 MiG-29 fighters and a part of the Kub air defense system.
Melicher claims that he did not have the authority to do so. The outgoing government cannot approve international agreements on fundamental issues of international politics.
According to Melicher, the transfer of the bulk of the air defense system was such an issue, and the Heger government acted unconstitutionally.
At the same time, Jaroslav Naď said that there were several documents confirming that the transfer of the fighter jets was lawful.
The new Slovak government's position on Ukraine
The current government of the country, headed by Robert Fico, has decided not to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
However, Slovakia wants to help Ukraine in the area of demining, including special equipment.
