Chris Sutton delivers verdict on potential Hyeongyu Oh Celtic exit amid Genk advances

There has been quiet on the transfer front at Celtic since the window opened last week as Brendan Rodgers aims to restructure his squad.

Plenty of movement is expected in both directions at Parkhead, with some fringe players departing to make way for new arrivals.

According to reports, Celtic striker Hyeongyu Oh could leave the club this summer amid interest from Belgian outfit Genk.

Following news that an initial offer from the Jupiler Pro League side had been turned down, they are now mooted to have increased their bid for Oh, and it remains to be seen if progress is made on that front.

Potentially creating a situation where Celtic only have one striker on the books, Chris Sutton has given his verdict on Oh’s prospective exit.

Sutton stated [Daily Record]: “Rodgers will know what he needs but he can add another striker to his shopping list as it looks like Oh Hyeon-gyu is on his way out. I actually think it’s a bit of a shame if he goes as there is a player there. Oh is raw and there is development needed.

“But he has a lot of tools and I like him as an alternative to Kyogo. He was overtaken by Idah in the second half of the season but he’s similar in some ways to the Norwich man in that he’s physical and can be a focal point.

“Clearly Rodgers isn’t so sure – and that’s fair enough. He sees the player every day in training and it’s entirely up to him. But letting Oh go means Celtic are going to be in the market for TWO new strikers.”

Oh has enjoyed some bright moments at Celtic, registering 12 goals in 47 appearances despite playing second fiddle to Kyogo Furuhashi for most of his time at Parkhead.

In the second half of 2023/24, Adam Idah’s exploits on loan also dampened his prospects of regular minutes. With Brendan Rodgers keen to bring the Republic of Ireland international back to Glasgow’s east end permanently, it now appears that a clean break between Oh and the club is on the cards.

Norwich City boss Johannes Hoff Thorup wants to take a look at Idah in pre-season before coming to a decision on his future. Regardless, if the Cork-born man does stay at Carrow Road, you get the impression that Celtic will look elsewhere for striking reinforcements.
