'Invaluable' £40m Manchester United target breaks silence over Old Trafford move

Edson Alvarez has been linked with Manchester United in recent days and now he’s spoken out over a potential move.

Signing a midfielder is among the absolute top priorities for Manchester United this summer and one option being linked is a former Ajax player who Erik ten Hag knows well.

This being Edson Alvarez who is now a target for Ineos just 12 months after he made a £35m move to West Ham.

He’s become the fifth former Ajax player to join United since Ten Hag’s arrival if the move came off.

Now, the player himself has actually broken his silence over the potential move which seems to be a link which makes sense.

Edson Alvarez breaks silence over potential Manchester United move

Alvarez was linked with a move to Old Trafford this week and it’s hardly a surprise given the Ten Hag link and the fact he works extremely well with Lisandro Martinez, and the Argentine has previously suggested a desire to play with him again.

Speaking while at the Copa America tournament with Mexico, Alvarez has now broken his silence when asked about making a move to Old Trafford, as quoted by Metro.

“I can only tell you that I’m focused on what I have to do. I know that the Copa América is a very important tournament where the eyes of the world are basically here,” Alvarez explained ahead of Mexico’s Copa America opener.

“Later there will be time to see what there is or what there isn’t.”

This sounds very much like Alvarez is hedging his bets and doesn’t want to comment on the potential move.

West Ham are reported to have slapped a £40m price tag onto Alvarez, a fee which is reasonable for a player of his quality.

Rio Ferdinand lauded Alvarez but United should only move if other options fail

Alvarez is a good defensive midfielder and there’s no denying that, however, he is limited in what he can do, and didn’t set the world alight for the Hammers in his debut campaign.

That being said Rio Ferdinand would likely be keen on this move as he lauded Alvarez back in 2022 during a Champions League broadcast on TNT Sports: “He does some of the stuff that you don’t necessarily see.

“He’s definitely not Instagrammable at all, but he does all the stuff where he breaks the play up against the opposition, and allows other players who might be more gifted on the ball to go and perform.

“These types of players are so invaluable, you appreciate them so much when they’re in your team because they give you a platform to go and play the football you love to play.”

Alvarez wouldn’t be a bad choice this summer, but he absolutely shouldn’t be the first choice. If he were to arrive though it would practically completely free Kobbie Mainoo up given his defensive prowess and hopefully negate the issue of midfield gaps we had to endure last season.
