Report: Newcastle are now confident they can sign 'bully' as talks accelerate

Newcastle United have been proactive during the start of the summer transfer window.

Lloyd Kelly is already through the door at Newcastle, while the club also tried to sign Tosin Adarabioyo before he opted to join Chelsea instead.

They’ve allowed a raft of players depart including the likes of Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett, while they are also on the hunt for a new goalkeeper.

Indeed, there is thought to be at least some confidence that Burnley’s James Trafford will arrive on that front, albeit there is seemingly still work to do.

A new striker could also be on the agenda.

Callum Wilson may be leaving St James’ Park this summer, meaning Alexander Isak will need back-up next season.

Now, it seems progress is accelerating in regard to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The England forward, hailed as a “bully” by Gary Neville when at his best, has reportedly been admired by Eddie Howe for a while.

Newcastle are closing in on signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin

According to the Daily Telegraph, the club are finally closing in on the Everton striker.

Calvert-Lewin is believed to be open to the move and a fee is still being negotiated, though there is optimism a deal can be struck.

Those at Newcastle are said to be confident that he could score more than the eight goals he bagged last season when playing in Howe’s system.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury record is a worry

Given the spate of injuries Newcastle suffered with last season, a player’s record must surely be taken into account when talking about potentially bringing them to St James’.

While it is true that Calvert-Lewin made 38 appearances last season, that hasn’t always been the case. The three seasons prior to the one just completed saw him miss a combined total of 63 games, after all.

Whether or not there are reasons for that is of course up for debate, with the striker able to do little about suffering a broken cheekbone or toe, for example.

Still, it is hardly a sure-fire bet that he will be able to regularly cover Isak, who is not exactly free of injury doubts himself.
