Terry Butcher sounds worried about 'pretty sobering' potential scenario involving Celtic

Celtic arrive into the new campaign defending both the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup after a successful campaign back at Parkhead for Brendan Rodgers.

Examining the wider picture, the Hoops have dominated Scottish football since the turn of the century, racking up a trophy haul in that time that most clubs across the world would hold some jealousy towards.

Now sitting on 118 major honours, Celtic have an unbroken history of claiming silverware and will be keen to build on that next season with even more success.

There are other scenarios at play if the Bhoys continue to win prizes at their current rate, something that Terry Butcher doesn’t seem too keen on unfolding.

Terry Butcher on potential Celtic trophy scenario

Speaking to Football Scotland, Terry Butcher has labelled the idea of Celtic overtaking Rangers’ combined trophy haul as a ‘pretty sobering’ prospect.

He said: “No, I never thought or even considered that. It’s pretty sobering from a Rangers perspective to hear that.”

Later on, he added: “There can be no room for passengers in the Rangers squad and team this season. There’s no doubt about that, they’ve got to stick to the script and the script has got to be a really tough one for them to make sure that they can compete even better than what they’ve done before because if they compete at the same level, then Celtic are going to go ahead.

“That would be a real concern for me as a Rangers player. You can’t allow that to happen, and I’m sure the Rangers fans will be saying: ‘That must not happen at any cost.”

Internally, Celtic will be focused on themselves this summer. There won’t be any thoughts about anything other than building for the coming season, and then whatever happens throughout the campaign will play out.

Despite winning the double last term, the Bhoys have a core in the dressing room who rarely rest on their laurels. Once the dust settles on recent success, it is time to zone in and prepare to try and repeat the achievement next time around. Hopefully, Brendan Rodgers and his group can do exactly that.
