Liel Abada lauds Alistair Johnston after Celtic defender's display against Messi's Argentina

The international fixtures are coming thick and fast as the Celtic fans keep track of all of their heroes turning out for their countries.

So far we have watched Callum McGregor and Anthony Ralston help keep Scotland with a chance to create history and qualify from the group stage of a major international tournament for the first time.

A win against Hungary tonight will seal that deal and the Celtic pair will go down in the Scottish history books.

Luis Palma was also on international duty with Honduras as he helped his country win their first two games in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

And Alistair Johnston is also on duty for Canada, as is Cameron Carter-Vickers with the USA, as both take part in the illustrious Copa America.

Alistair Johnston praised despite Canada defeat

And last night it was the Johnston who had the unenviable task of taking on Lionel Messi and current world champions, Argentina, as Canada looked to make their mark in the tournament.

But despite losing 2-0, the Canadian right-back put in a good performance and was sent a message by former Celtic winger, Liel Abada, as Johnston posted a snap on Instagram of himself alongside the legend that is Messi.

Next up for Johnston and Canada is Peru on Tuesday night where the Celtic defender must not lose if he has hopes of progressing through the group stages.

The Peruvians drew their opening group game against Chile and know that a win almost certainly puts them into the next round so Johnston faces yet another tough test.

After that, Chile awaits Canada on Sunday the 30th of June. A win will keep Johnston at the tournament until at least the 5th of July when the quarter-final stages could await the Celtic defender and another crack at one of the best teams in the world.
