Arne Slot reluctant to make £25million player his first Liverpool signing because of Erik ten Hag

Arne Slot has it all to do at Liverpool, with the new manager needing to make an immediate impact at Anfield.

That won’t be easy given the superb job carried out by his predecessor Jurgen Klopp, but the Dutchman will undoubtedly be backed by the Reds chiefs this summer.

Bringing new faces to Merseyside will be among his priorities, with the manager free to focus on transfers with the window now open.

There will be plenty of discussion regarding his first Liverpool signature, with plenty of pressure then on the shoulders of that player.

It remains to be seen exactly where he will want to strengthen, although David Ornstein has reported that the Reds are eager to sign a new wide player.

Arne Slot makes a decision on Lutsharel Geertruida

Whether or not Slot is of that opinion is another matter, but the manager could be tempted to turn to the Eredivisie to strengthen any position given his familiarity with the league.

The Dutchman has just left his role with Feyenoord, having also managed in the country’s top league with AZ Alkmaar.

One Eredivisie star who has been linked with a switch to Anfield is Feyenoord ace Lutsharel Geertruida, who is currently on international duty with the Netherlands.

But according to the Mirror [print version, page 73], Slot is reluctant to sign the defender after Erik ten Hag received criticism for taking Eredivisie players with him to Manchester United.

The newspaper added that the new Liverpool boss is a big admirer of his former player, who Feyenoord value at £25million.

Will Liverpool pursue a move for the Euro 2024 man?

Like Ten Hag, Slot has left the Dutch top flight for the English top flight, with the former having moved from Ajax to Old Trafford.

And he quickly turned to familiar territory for help, with the likes of Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia all joining the Red Devils directly from the Eredivisie.

Geertruida is clearly a player that Slot knows well, with the duo having worked together at Feyenoord, but a reunion at Anfield may not take place this summer.

He is, however, a player who could bring a lot to Merseyside, with his versatility and experience certain to ease Slot’s transition.

Geertruida has made almost 200 Feyenoord appearances and is approaching double figures in terms of Netherlands caps.

And impressively, the 23-year-old has proven that he can play anywhere across the backline, as well as in midfield.

His current focus will, however, not be on the transfer window, with the player currently looking to go far with the Netherlands at Euro 2024.

There is, of course, already a strong connection between the nation and the Reds, with Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch all in the current squad in Germany.
