Report: Man City have the chance to sign midfielder Gareth Southgate praised for just £20m this summer

It has been reported if Manchester City are prepared to pay a transfer fee of £20 million, they could sign one of England’s most talented young midfielders.

Pep Guardiola’s men are in desperate need of a fresh face in midfield — especially one who could provide cover for Rodri, who has already started two games for Spain at the European Championship.

With Luis de la Fuente’s side looking like one of the best teams in the tournament, they could go quite far. The Manchester City maestro is one of, if not their most important player and is expected to start every key fixture in Germany.

Report reveals all there is to know about Man City and Archie Gray

Last Monday, it was claimed that unless a player leaves the club, City will not make a major summer signing.

However, the report claimed that the Sky Blues are looking to sell Joao Cancelo and Kalvin Phillips. If their sales end up occurring, the English giants could bring fresh blood to their squad.

The Sun (23/06/2024, page 56) revealed that Manchester City, alongside Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Archie Gray.

It was stated that with Leeds United failing to secure Premier League promotion, they are now willing to sell their prized asset for just £20 million.

Borussia Dortmund, who were also interested in signing the 18-year-old are put off by Leeds’ asking price.

In March, Gareth Southgate claimed that in case of injuries ahead of their friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, Gray was one of the youngsters who he named could play a part — stating that he’s been “doing very, very well” via Sky Sports for the Whites.

Manchester City should make a move for Archie Gray

Considering how young Archie Gray is, £20 million seems like a fee that would seem like an overpay from Manchester City or any club at first.

Gray has yet to play top-flight football in his career.

But with the teenager being a remarkable talent —renowned for his excellent passing, expert carrying of the ball and stunning technique, City could be signing a prospect who could prove to be a brilliant long-term investment.

Considering Gray can play both as a holding midfielder as well as in a box-to-box midfield role, his versatility could make him a huge asset for City.

With Pep Guardiola as his manager, Gray would also have the incentive to learn from a coach who has managed some of the greatest midfielders in the history of the game.
