‘Impossible’: Gary Neville tells Gareth Southgate what to do about Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘problem’

England have undoubtedly let themselves down at Euro 2024 so far, even if the Three Lions are unbeaten.

A 1-0 win against Serbia and 1-1 draw with Denmark means Gareth Southgate’s side are in top spot in Group C after two matches.

But the hugely talented squad has underperformed, leaving questions as to how far they can go in Germany this summer.

One major issue that Southgate has faced is getting all of his star players onto the pitch at the same time.

The manager has been forced to play players out of position to achieve exactly that, one of which is Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The right-back has been utilised in midfield so far in Germany, a role which Southgate experimented with in the build-up to the tournament.

Fans have seemingly been divided over how the move has worked out at the major tournament so far, with former defender Gary Neville now weighing in on the debate.

“Jude Bellingham will obviously stay in the team,” Neville told Sky Sports. “The big question mark is around Phil Foden. There is something inside me that feels very uncomfortable leaving Foden out of an England team.

“If we can’t make Foden and Trent Alexander-Arnold international football players for England then we have a real problem. Other nations wouldn’t do that and we would regret it in years to come.

“I don’t know if there’s a change of system to get them all in – three at the back to get Alexander-Arnold in at right wing-back?

“Do something quite stark, which allows you to have a little less protection in midfield because you have three at the back and Declan Rice in front with Kobbie Mainoo? We did that in the Euros against Italy.

“It takes me back to 2004 when we had Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham and we were trying to squeeze them in with balance. It was impossible.

“You’d end up with a situation where you play one of them out of position or do you upset one of them? That’s where Gareth is going to be.”

Will the Liverpool right-back stay in midfield for England?

England will finish off Group C with a test against Slovenia, with Southgate undoubtedly set to ring in the changes.

One of which may just involve dropping Alexander-Arnold completely, with Conor Gallagher potentially coming in.

That change happened during the first two matches in Germany, but could now be made from the very first whistle.

Unfortunately for the Liverpool ace, it seems that Southgate will continue to rely on Manchester City’s Kyle Walker at right-back, meaning the Anfield man misses out entirely.

Former Liverpool man Graeme Souness has given a mixed verdict on Alexander-Arnold’s Euro 2024 so far, while ex-Arsenal player Emmanuel Petit is convinced that he ‘looks lost’ in midfield.

With 1-1 draws against both Denmark and Serbia, Slovenia should provide England with another tough test, meaning Southgate must play his cards right.

Getting it spot on tactically is a must, but the man in the dugout must also choose the right personnel in order to secure a positive result.
