Chris Sutton delivers his honest verdict on Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to dominate the headlines as England’s Euro 2024 progresses.

The Anfield ace has been handed starts by Gareth Southgate for their opening two matches against Serbia and Denmark.

The former ended in a 1-0 win, with the latter finishing 1-1, leaving the Three Lions top of the group with one game left.

Their pole position has, however, been overshadowed by discussions regarding Gareth Southgate’s tactics.

The manager has particularly come under fire for playing Alexander-Arnold in midfield, as opposed to his traditional right-back role.

Chris Sutton shares Trent Alexander-Arnold verdict for England

Jamie O’Hara tore into the 25-year-old after his display against Serbia, with Alan Shearer claiming that the midfield experiment unfortunately hasn’t worked out.

Their fellow pundit Chris Sutton has now weighed in on the debate, sharing the view of Newcastle United icon Shearer.

“Clearly the Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment in midfield has not worked,” Sutton told BBC Sport. “Gareth Southgate has hooked him off in two games, which tells its own story.

“I am expecting him to make a change there, the interesting thing will be to see if anyone else comes in.”

What will Gareth Southgate do with the Liverpool star?

Alexander-Arnold got the nod from the first whistle in both games, but was withdrawn minutes 69 and 54 in matches one and two respectively.

On both occasions, Southgate replaced the Liverpool man with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, who could start next time out.

There is also the presence of young stars Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton, who may be young but are more accustomed to playing in midfield.

Perhaps listening to all the noise and admitting defeat with Alexander-Arnold may be the most sensible option for Southgate to take, with England not going to win Euro 2024 with their current approach.

It is a squad of world-class stars, but the Three Lions certainly aren’t playing that way, with top spot in Group C still up for grabs.

Finishing in first will likely give the nation a much better chance of going all the way in Germany, but something certainly needs to change for the clash versus Slovenia.
