Report: 'Complete' player wants to join Newcastle United, transfer could now happen quickly

It is going to be a busy week in the transfer market for Newcastle United, as the Magpies step up their search for a striker.

While Newcastle United fans were basking in the weekend sun across the North East, Toon officials were working hard on multiple deals ahead of the June 30th PSR deadline.

One of those deals is for a striker, with the Magpies keen to bring in someone to replace Callum Wilson at St James’ Park. The 32-year-old has been viewed as likely to leave the club this summer, but only if a replacement arrives.

He emerged as a contender to arrive in May, and now talks have intensified. It has been claimed that Newcastle United are confident of agreeing a deal with the Toffees, who are interested in taking Yankuba Minteh the other way.

But while it is unclear who Minteh will join, with Lyon also interested, it would appear that Calvert-Lewin’s most likely destination is St James’ Park.

How Calvert-Lewin feels about signing for Newcastle

According to Give Me Sport, a deal to take Calvert-Lewin from Everton to Newcastle is expected to move quickly, with talks already advanced between all parties.

Give Me Sport’s report adds that the 27-year-old is keen on a move to Tyneside, with Everton considering Chelsea’s Armando Broja as a replacement.

Calvert-Lewin’s current contract at Everton is due to expire in 2025, and it was reported that the Toffees were hoping to hand him an extension. However, Geordie Boot Boys were recently told that the striker is unlikely ink a new deal, and it looks like that is giving Newcastle the chance to swoop in.

It is great to read that Calvert-Lewin is keen, as that would suggest that he is willing to act as understudy to Alexander Isak, who will be Newcastle’s main man up front after scoring 25 times last season.

Calvert-Lewin deal could force an outgoing at St James’ Park

If, or potentially when, Calvert-Lewin arrives, you have to imagine that will speed up Callum Wilson’s Toon departure.

It has been suggested that he is open to a new challenge elsewhere, but that would likely only be sanctioned if Newcastle got a replacement through the door.

Calvert-Lewin, who was described as a ‘complete‘ striker by Carlo Ancelotti in 2020, would be exactly that, and the fact that he is five years younger is a huge advantage. It makes him an ideal candidate to take Wilson’s place, although some fans will be concerned about his injury record and recent struggles in front of goal.

However, Newcastle believe that Howe can get a lot more out of Calvert-Lewin, while he was available for the majority of last season. He made 38 Everton appearances in all competitions, missing seven games in total. In contrast, Wilson made 26 Newcastle appearances in all competitions, missing 25 games in total.

While it might not be a glamorous signing and the jury will be out, this may prove to be a sensible bit of business – depending on the transfer fee.
