‘Absolutely gutted’ Liverpool player issues apology after what’s happened at Euro 2024

Liverpool have 10 players representing their nations at Euro 2024, with each star looking to go as far as possible with their respective countries.

The competition is well underway in Germany, with the host nation going strong, having finished top of Group A.

Also in contention of going on to lift the trophy are the likes of Spain and Portugal, who have each won both of their matches so far.

England meanwhile remain unbeaten, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez looking to help the Three Lions go all the way.

The Netherlands will also like their chances of a lengthy stay in Germany, with Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch all keen to play their part.

Andy Robertson issues Scotland apology after Euro 2024 exit

There is, however, already an Anfield casualty at Euro 2024, which came after club teammates Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai went head to head.

The Scotland and Hungary captains met in their final Group A clash, with the Hungarians narrowly winning 1-0.

The victory has kept their tournament hopes alive, but it has sent Scotland home, with Robertson now apologising to his nation for the early exit.

“Look, tonight is devastating, there’s no buttering it up,” said Robertson, as per BBC Sport. “All the lads are absolutely gutted, but it’s up to us to pick them up, and that will only happen slowly but surely.

“But what I will say is thank you to the country, because we felt everyone behind us, and we knew the excitement back home, and yeah sorry for letting you down.”

Liverpool star Robertson helped guide Scotland to Euro 2024, but the loss to Hungary was the final nail in the coffin for Steve Clarke’s side.

It was always going to be a difficult task in Germany given how their competition began with a test against the host nation.

A 5-1 defeat on opening night ensured the most miserable start possible, but Scotland did impressively bounce back to draw 1-1 with Switzerland.

But the Scots leave Germany after finishing rock bottom of the standings, much to the disappointment of their captain fantastic.

Szoboszlai meanwhile will be keen to keep going with Hungary after they clinched third spot, having finally picking up their first win of the tournament.

The midfielder has become the youngest captain in UEFA European Championship history, with his leadership helping Hungary emerge victorious over his Anfield teammate Robertson in dramatic fashion.

The winner arrived in the 10th minute of injury time, with Robertson watching on from the bench having been substituted minutes before.

The £8million defender, who would have wanted to make it to the knockout stages but didn’t want to say it out loud, will now undoubtedly take a break before switching his focus back to club football.
