Roy Keane shares what Brian Clough did at Nottingham Forest that made things 'perfect' for him

Every player who spent time playing for Nottingham Forest under the legendary Brian Clough has a story to tell about the great man.

Listen to Mark Crossley for example and he can reel off three or four hilarious situations where Clough showcased his uniqueness.

Clough spent 18 years in place at the City Ground, leading Forest to European Cup glory on two occasions.

The only piece of silverware that Clough didn’t get his hands on was the FA Cup – with Forest cruelly robbed against Tottenham in 1991.

One of Clough’s most successful finds as Forest manager was that of Roy Keane.

He brought him to the club from the Irish outfit Cobh Ramblers and the rest, as they say, is history.

Now, the respected pundit has been discussing what Clough did for him when he first arrived that proved perfect.

Roy Keane shares what Brian Clough did for him when he signed for Forest

Keane was only a teenager when he first signed for Forest and heading to a new country must have proved daunting.

Clough ensured Keane had everything he wanted though, ensuring a smooth transition to men’s football in England.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane has shared what the great manager did when he first came over to Forest.

He said: “Then I went to Forest and all of a sudden you’re going, you’re getting paid to be a full-time player. It was like I’d died and gone to heaven. I couldn’t believe my luck at 18, 19 years of age.

“Talk about picking the right club for me. Forest was perfect. The city was the right size for me.

“Brian Clough, they put me in digs near the train, near the stadium. I met some good lads who I’m big friends with now. I just couldn’t have picked it. It was the perfect environment for me.”

Roy Keane named in Nottingham Forest best eleven of all-time

The midfielder only spent three years at Forest but that was enough time for him to make a sizeable impact at the club.

He scored 33 times in 154 appearances in all competitions and proved a real hit with the fan base.

Keane was named in the club’s all-time eleven when the supporters were asked to vote in 2015.

That speaks volumes as to where he stands when discussing the greatest players to have played for the club.

These comments clearly suggest that he’s forever grateful to Forest for taking a chance on him.

Since Forest returned to the Premier League, Keane has often had nice things to say about the club and clearly Nottingham is close to his heart.
