The Scotland decision Steve Clarke made that exposed him to criticism about Celtic’s James Forrest

With the Euros over for Scotland, the Celtic contingent can now return home for some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Callum McGregor and Anthony Ralston were the only two Celtic players involved in all three games in the tournament whilst Greg Taylor and James Forrest kicked their heels on the Scotland bench.

With Scotland needing goals to get out of the group stages, the Celtic fans thought they would have seen a James Forrest appearance at some point.

But as it was, the Celtic winger remained on the bench as Scotland exited the tournament with a whimper after a 1-0 defeat by Hungary.

Former Celtic hero, Chris Sutton, has already asked questions about why Clarke never used Forrest and it will be interesting to see if the Scotland manager addresses this.

However, there is one excuse he can’t use after a decision taken in last night’s defeat to Hungary left Clarke open to criticism for not utilising the Celtic legend at all in Germany.

Stuart Armstrong opens up Clarke to Scotland criticism

When needing goals, Clarke opted to bring on Stuart Armstrong and it is a substitution that perplexed talkSPORT pundit, Sam Matterface.

Matterface said [talkSPORT], “I wonder whether or not they used James Forrest enough. I mean they took him and they didn’t use him.

“He’s an experienced player, his awareness, he’s a creative player. I wonder whether or not he could have done with a little bit of his poise right at the very end.

“And if they’re worried about his fitness, well, they threw Stuart Armstrong on right at the very end.

“Yeah he had a couple of situations but his corners weren’t particularly great and his poise in the box wasn’t wonderful.

“I know he made the chance for the penalty but he obviously was a little bit ring-rusty as well.”

It could even be argued that Clarke made two errors last night. Bringing on Lewis Morgan when he has only had eleven international minutes in six years was also baffling.

Last night needed a big-game player who can change a game and Clarke left him on the bench. This is bizarre because the Scotland manager took him to Germany for that exact reason as the Celtic winger made a material difference on whether or not Celtic won silverware last season.

I’m pretty sure this won’t be the last we hear on this matter but for Forrest, he must be questioning whether or not he should continue his Scotland career after this latest snub by Steve Clarke.
