‘What’s going on’: Damon Hill on what Lewis Hamilton might be saying to Ferrari after Spanish GP performance

Lewis Hamilton finally returned to the podium at the Spanish Grand Prix after a 17-race wait since his last top-three finish in a Grand Prix.

His second-place finish in the Sprint Race in China doesn’t technically count towards his incredible tally of 198 podium finishes and he’ll hope that he can reach a round number of 200 at his home race in Silverstone as well if he has a strong Austrian Grand Prix.

The biggest storyline of the Formula 1 season has been Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming move to Ferrari where he’ll hope he can potentially achieve that coveted eighth world championship.

However, for the second weekend in a row, Mercedes looked more competitive than their Italian rivals.

Damon Hill was speaking on Sky Sports F1 about Lewis Hamilton and how he might be feeling after watching Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’s struggles.

It was a far from straightforward race for Ferrari with their two drivers clashing at turn one and neither holding back in the post-race interviews.

Team principal Frederic Vasseur will hope that when Hamilton and Leclerc are working together in 2025 he won’t have to mediate between the two stars.

Damon Hill shares how Lewis Hamilton might be feeling about Ferrari after the Spanish Grand Prix

Speaking about the performance of both Mercedes drivers, Hill said: “George [Russell] must be thinking what do I have to do, he’s found himself in the lead of the last two races and he’s not been anywhere, he didn’t get to the podium this time.

“And Lewis [Hamilton], he enjoyed himself today, didn’t he? You can see that the old Lewis is back, when he gets a sniff of a podium or victory he’s able to go into that other space that he’s got.

“But I wonder if he’s going to be on the phone to Ferrari going, ‘Guys, what are you doing? I’m coming to you next year, what’s going on?’”

Vasseur and Hamilton’s previous relationship should make them a formidable partnership alongside Leclerc next year.

Every update package is vital at this stage of the development cycle of these cars and if Ferrari keeps going backwards then Hamilton will have questions.

Lewis Hamilton gets the better of Ferrari for second consecutive F1 race

Ferrari headed into the Spanish Grand Prix with an impressive update package that they hoped would give themselves an advantage over their nearest rivals.

However, it was rushed through to be available in Barcelona and appeared as though some finer adjustments were still needed with Leclerc and Sainz lining up alongside each other on the third row.

While it appeared as though both cars initially got the better of Hamilton off the line, he managed to shuffle back into fourth at the end of the first chicane.

From there, Mercedes always looked slightly quicker, although that didn’t stop Hamilton from racing both cars at various points in the race due to differing strategies.

Sainz was unimpressed with the move Hamilton launched on him during the race and called on the stewards to demand he give the place back.

Unfortunately for the Spaniard, they disagreed and Hamilton drove off into the distance to eventually secure third place.

Hamilton may be wondering what’s going on at Ferrari after gambling that they would be the best team to move forward with in 2025 and beyond.

Vasseur will be aware that he has a unique opportunity in front of him to work alongside Hamilton and will be demanding his team provide the best car possible for him next year.
