Following Michigan‘s 2023 season, plenty of talented Wolverines moved on to the NFL. At the same time, there are also plenty of talented players returning, including Will Johnson, who new head coach Sherrone Moore is expecting great things from.

Recently, Moore explained what he feels makes Johnson special. In particular, he praised him for his work ethic despite his previous success.

“To be the best corner in the country,” Sherrone Moore said. “The dude just doesn’t stop working. I gotta tell him sometimes, ‘Bro, you gotta chill.’ He’s not satisfied with anything. He’s not satisfied with hype. He’s not satisfied with any of that.”

Will Johnson came to Michigan as a five-star recruit in the Class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the second-ranked corner in that class and the 16th-ranked player overall.

In two seasons at Michigan, Will Johnson quickly became a key figure on the Michigan defense. In that time, he’s played in 26 games and has 54 total tackles, three of which were tackles for a loss. He also has seven interceptions, seven pass breakups, and a defensive touchdown. That included a big interception in the national title game victory over Washington.

“It’s cool to be around those types of players because, usually, you’re pushing those players to be great, and when you have a guy like that who has all the hype around him, who has all the postseason success from last year and he’s done it at the biggest stage and he’s made plays, but he doesn’t care. He just wants to work and get better,” Moore said.

“For me, it’s just cool to watch that. I’m just here to support him in any way I can.”

An All-Big Ten selection, Will Johnson was named the Defensive MVP of the 2023 National Championship Game. Now, he’s looking to build on that performance going into his junior season.

Michigan CB Will Johnson discusses potentially playing offense, goals for 2024 season

Already an excellent defensive player, the chance that Will Johnson plays some offense in 2024 is something that he recently discussed.

“There’s always more. I’m always hungry for more. Last year, I would say I had a pretty good year, but I wasn’t where I wanted to be, at all. So I got a lot more to shoot for this year and just be the best version of me I can be,” Johnson said.

“A lot of great team goals we have — obviously to win a national championship, Big Ten championship, beat all of our rivals. And just be the best leader I can and be the best version of me that I can be.”
