The expectations are high for the Texas Longhorns this upcoming season as they join the SEC. Fresh off of a 12-2 season that featured a Big 12 Championship win and their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers has a lot to do with Texas’ forecasted success entering his third season as the team’s starter. But he’ll have to do so with a new supporting cast of pass catchers, which he recently spoke about with Robert Griffin III on G3 and The Ones.
“I mean like you said, it’s tough because that was year two with all those guys last year and we were comfortable with each other,” Ewers admitted. “And super happy for all those guys, I mean their dreams are all coming true first off.”
Texas had a whopping 11 players get drafted in the most recent NFL Draft, with five of those players representing Ewers’ top five pass catchers from last year. As Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, Ja’Tavion Sanders, Jordan Whittington, and running back Jonathon Brooks all heard their names called throughout the draft.
The Longhorns brought in a group of weapons for Ewers this offseason through the transfer portal to combat their losses. Headlined former Alabama playersIsaiah Bond and Amari Niblack along with wide receivers Silas Bolden and Matthew Golden. All of which are adjusting seamlessly in Austin according to Ewers.
“We brought in a bunch of guys and I think they’re doing a great job of trusting the process and understanding what it takes to get to where we need to get to,” Ewers said. “And you know, we’re throwing every week trying to get that timing down and they’ve been down in on on the playbook, and Coach [Chris] Jackson‘s got them right in that receiver room.”
Texas was the Big 12’s third-best passing offense last season, with Ewers finishing second in the conference in passing yards for the season only behind Dillon Gabriel. A standard that they’ll look to maintain and potentially build upon this upcoming season in the SEC.
Bond and Niblack combined for 995 yards and eight touchdowns in the SEC last season, and the Longhorns’ being able to remain dominant through the air in 2024 will definitely be one of the more closely watched storylines to start their season.
