Heading into the fourth inning of the deciding Game 3 of the men’s College World Series Finals, the Texas A&M Aggies find themselves in a 3-1 hole, trailing the Tennessee Volunteers. Before the action got underway in the fourth inning, ESPN’s Kris Budden had a conversation with Aggies head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle to get his thoughts on the first half of the game.

The first topic was Travis Chestnut‘s bunt, which gave the Aggies their first and only run scored of the game. But why did Schlossnagle have his hitter pull off such a gutsy move with two outs on the board?

“Well, he struck out a lot, so [it] couldn’t be worse,” Schlossnagle said jokingly. “We let him know to do that on that play, and it worked out.”

“We need some two-out hits. Tennessee got three two-out hits in the last inning to score a couple of runs. I thought Lamkin hung in there, given this situation: three starts in seven or eight days. And you got a credit, (Dean) Curley, for getting that hit off of (Joshua) Stewart.

Schlossnagle Also explained his decision to pull starting pitcher Justin Lamkin early in the game

“Yeah, I mean he just [was] not as crisp, which I expected. I hoped the wind could keep some balls in the ballpark, but Burke’s hot; they have a good team. You really gotta be on your A-game.”

Unlike in his last start, sophomore pitcher Justin Lamkin struggles to open the game. He would give up a solo shot home run to the Volunteers’ lead-off hitter, second baseman Christian Moore. After getting the first two outs of the third inning, Lamkin couldn’t find the right stuff to get out of the inning unscathed, resulting in the Volunteers adding two more runs.
