'A lot': Declan Rice shares how Chelsea's Conor Gallagher has 'surprised' a lot of people at England

Chelsea star Conor Gallagher is being tipped to make his first ever start at a major international tournament.

According to The Athletic, Conor Gallagher is set to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s starting line-up on Tuesday night against Slovenia.

Gallagher, who’s got 15 England caps, was an unused substitute throughout the whole of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 24-year-old Blues star has had minutes so far at this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament, coming off the bench in the opening two group stage matches.

As the Three Lions wrap up their group tonight versus Slovenia, Gallagher is set to be promoted into England’s XI.

Declan Rice shares how Conor Gallagher has surprised people

England midfielder Declan Rice is expected to start alongside Gallagher in the centre of the park against Slovenia.

Interestingly, Rice has said in his pre-match press conference that international teammate Gallagher has shocked some people at England with his quality both in and out of possession.

“Look, obviously you’ve seen Conor Gallagher’s season this year at Chelsea and if he does start I think you’re going to see exactly what he done at Chelsea this year,” Rice told talkSPORT.

“He surprised a lot of people. On the ball, off the ball, what he gives for the team, how unselfish he is.

“I know Gareth loves him. Equally as much he loves Trent [Alexander-Arnold] as well and he loves all the other midfield players he can pick from.”

Chelsea star must seize huge opportunity

If reports are true, Gallagher has to try and play the game of his life this evening at the Euros.

England boss Gareth Southgate is clearly still trying to find the right balance in his midfield, so the chance is there to really stake a claim for a permanent starting role.

Gallagher needs to be aggressive but effective in his defensive work, while also being progressive on the ball to get his side further up the pitch.

If he can help England seal top spot in the group with a dominant display, the Chelsea central midfielder could make himself undroppable for the knockout rounds.
